The original design for the floor lamp used 5/8 inch [16mm] and 3/4 inch [19mm] diameter 3/32 inch [2mm] thick wall stainless steel tubing so we could bend it smoothly and run the wiring inside and just polish for a chrome like finish.

For this banana tree design I used some 1/4 inch [6mm] and 5/16 inch [8mm] diameter carbon steel rod that I had some four foot [1.2m] lengths of in my material's bin.

Here are some of the fabrication details...

First I used heat to bend the rod so as not to crack it and make it stiffen to shape. Then I cleaned the four pieces and worked on how to clamp them together for welding.

Pulled out my ac/dc stick welder from under the bench and set up my little welding station. I use a 25 amp extension cord plugged into the 220 volt 15 amp clothes dryer plug.

This is the front view after welding it all together. I also did some sanding for primer and paint.

This is the side view. As you can see it has a nice simple and interesting fluid shape.

This time I didn't choose the color. My daughter wanted black to show off the metal and my work and of course to accent with any colors in her kitchen.

This was a fun and very gratifying project. I hope you enjoyed sharing this with me as much I did making this banana tree. Of course she sent me this picture in her kitchen after buying some fresh bananas and said it is "awesome"!!!
